George Plesko - Design Principal, Allurent
Customers today have less time than ever to shop and recent Gartner research indicates that most e-commerce customers are not repeat visitors – meaning that retailers have just one opportunity to entice and engage consumers. How are retailers moving beyond the HTML, page-based paradigm to streamline and simplify the shopping experience?
In this session, George Plesko discusses the necessary steps designers must take to ensure a retailers’ customer is able to quickly find, examine, select and buy merchandise in a way that is easier, more intuitive and smoother than the majority of current shopping experiences, which too often are cumbersome, complex and ultimately unsatisfying.

Serendipitous Shopping: Helping Online Shoppers Find that Great Discovery
George Plesko - Design Principal, Allurent
Part of the overall shopping experience is the excitement of discovering a great find – be it a pair of “to-die-for” boots or a limited edition snowboard with a unique graphic design. While online shopping is convenient, it doesn’t always satisfy consumers’ craving for that unexpected buy.
Online retailers are beginning to realize the importance of enabling people to “discover” products. To achieve this, it's essential that people be allowed to take their own paths when interacting with a retailer’s Web site and merchandise.
Through creative merchandising and interaction design, retailers can create a continuous end-to-end navigation experience, allowing a seemingly basic task to become more organic and fluid – in fact, more serendipitous. Learn the tools and techniques you can use to make an online shopping approach support serendipity and discovery.
