He built the backing infrastructures at Salon.com, InfoWorld.com, Friendster.com and Flickr.com, where he currently manages operations.

Wayne Ariola

AriolaWayne Ariola is vice president of corporate development at Parasoft. He oversees the company's business development team as well as the enterprise test team. In this capacity, Wayne is responsible for product strategy that leverages customer input from the over 10,000 Parasoft customers worldwide. Wayne brings more than 12 years of strategic consulting experience within the high technology and software development industries. Prior to joining Parasoft, Wayne was responsible for corporate development for Fasturn Inc., a company he helped to start. He was a principal consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he was recognized as a leader in the strategic change practice. Wayne joined Parasoft in March of 2003. He has a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an M.B.A. from Indiana University.

Artur Bergman

Jon C. Bostrom

Senior Chief Architect — Java, Nokia Inc.

BostrumJon Bostrom is senior director of Java in technology platforms for Nokia, which he joined in 2003 as chief Java architect in Nokia mobile software. Jon has over 23 years of systems experience, including designing and implementing large-scale, object-oriented, distributed applications. Jon is responsible for defining and driving the vision and architecture for the mobile end-to-end Java environment and has focused on defining the technology and creating the partnerships that will foster the next generation of Java-enabled mobile devices. Prior to joining Nokia, Jon was chief architect and a key driver of Sun's mobility technology solutions group, working to define the end-to-end architecture for Java technology solutions in 2.5 and 3G environments. Jon was the Sun lead architect for SprintPCS Vision and the lead architect for DoCoMo i-Mode Java. He was the lead designer for Java software provisioning for wireless and the creator of the "Java Service Vending Machine" concept. Jon has advised most of the top manufacturers and operators around the world on wireless data services, and he is also one of the original members of the Jini technology team, having been instrumental in the Jini technology launch and formation of the Jini technology community effort. During his time with Sun, Jon won two Chairman's awards for technology innovation and filed patents in Java mobile security, interface design and content handling. He has also been a key contributor to JavaOne and has spoken as the keynote at many software events across the world, and he is on the board of directors of the Open Services Getaway Initiative (OSGi), co-leads the Mobile Expert Group, and is co-spec lead for the Java Community Process (JCP)'s JSR 232, "Mobile Operational Management."

Ryan Breen

Vice President, Technology, Gomez Inc.

BreenRyan Breen is the vice president of technology at Gomez, a provider of Internet application performance information. After graduating from Duke University with degrees in computer science and economics in 2000, he led a team creating a suite of Web performance management technologies, including a Java-based, Web browser emulation platform. Using these tools, Ryan has worked with hundreds of top Internet companies to measure and manage the performance of their Web applications. As more customers have moved to Ajax technologies, Ryan has helped them define performance best practices applicable to the new development style.

Robert Brewin

Co-CTO, Sun Software, Sun Microsystems

BrewinRobert Brewin is a Sun distinguished engineer and co-CTO of Sun Software. He is responsible for developer products and application platforms, which include the Java platform, mobility, enterprise software and business integration products. Within this role, some of his key areas of responsibility include Sun's ever expanding role in Web 2.0 technologies and generally improving the developer experience, alignment and integration of our platforms, technologies and tools in a next-generation Web world. Bob will be bringing his extensive customer- and developer-focused experience to bear, as prior to taking on this new role he was the chief architect for Sun's developer tools portfolio, where he was a principal driver behind a number of key initiatives and projects. These projects included strategic enhancements to the award-winning NetBeans IDE, architectural changes and alignment of the Studio family of tools and add-ons with NetBeans. Robert was also the visionary behind the design, creation and delivery of the revolutionary Java Studio Creator product. Prior to joining Sun over 13 years ago, Robert worked at Taumetric Corporation, a leading supplier of compiler technology to many industry-leading companies.

ByronByron is the Principal of Textura Design, Inc. He first stole Zeldman's code in 1997, then lived dotcoms, dotcom crashes, Clip-n-Seal, and now he is evangelizing Standards-based design, writing a New Riders book about blogging, and speaking at conferences. With more than 11 years of experience, Byron is an expert blogger, web designer and developer. An entrepreneur and an inventor, he also consults with clients, co-founded the Blog Business Summit, and publishes a network of successful blogs, including one of the first business blogs.

Miguel Castro

CastroMiguel Castro is an independent consultant and trainer who specializes in building .NET solutions. He is a Microsoft MVP, INETA speaker, VSLive! conference speaker, contributor to CoDe Magazine and DevSource.com, as well as an active blogger, and he has been a software developer for over 20 years. With a Microsoft background that goes all the way back to VB 1.0 (and QuickBasic, in fact), Miguel jumped on .NET as soon as the first public beta was released and has provided .NET solutions for clients in a variety of industries, including financial markets, pharmaceuticals, trucking, insurance, food distribution and others. He considers himself to be a .NET developer and architect and has equal love for both Visual Basic and C#. Miguel has spoken at numerous user groups and code camps around the country, where he focuses on preaching and evangelizing the world of custom WebControl development, with hopes of increasing the numbers that tackle this underused technology. William Cava

CAVAAs chief technology officer, Bill Cava is responsible for guiding Ektron's technology direction, including product strategy, new product development and engineering practices. With more than a decade of experience, Cava brings his passion for Internet technology, software architecture, and user-centric interface design to Ektron. Prior to joining Ektron, Bill served as a team leader and software architect at Lycos, one of the Internet's first search engines. There he led numerous high-profile projects, including a large-scale distributed advertising content management system still used across well-known sites such as Lycos and Wired. As an undergraduate at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Bill pursued degrees in computer science, Italian literature, and fine art, and is currently finishing a Master of Science degree in computer science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Christophe Coenraets

CoenraetsChristophe Coenraets is senior evangelist for Adobe's new developer-centric Rich Internet Applications initiative. Christophe started working with Java in 1996 and became the technical evangelist for Powersoft's (which became part of Sybase) Java and Internet Application Division. Christophe then joined Macromedia as the technical evangelist for JRun, the company's J2EE application server. In this position, Christophe started working on Rich Internet Applications and on ways of integrating Flash front ends with J2EE back ends. Christophe has been a regular speaker at conferences worldwide for the last ten years.

Jesse James Garrett

Kevin Hakman

Kevin pioneered Ajax in the enterprise, cofounding General Interface in 2001. Since that time General Interface (GI) has been powering Web applications that look, feel and perform like desktop applications, but run in the browser at Fortune 500 and US government organizations. General Interface was also the first to use its own toolkit to provide full visual tooling for Ajax when it released its 2.0 version in 2003. TIBCO acquired General Interface in 2004 to extend its vision for service-oriented applications to the end user. Kevin is a contributor to several trade publications.

HerrenJohn Herren is a developer evangelist for Zend Technologies and a freelance technical consultant who focuses on Web applications. Along with founding neat experiments like TagCloud.com, John served as senior project architect at Ionzoft Inc., and he cofounded what is now the largest Web development firm in Mississippi. He is a Zend-certified engineer, a published author of Linux certification study material, and is really, really close to converting his first patent. John enjoys using open source software like PHP to bend the Web into exciting new chimeras of hyperlinked goodness.

MariniJoe Marini has been active in the Web and graphics industry for more than 15 years. He was an original member of the Dreamweaver engineering team at Macromedia, and has also held prominent roles in creating products such as QuarkXPress, mFactory's mTropolis, and Extensis QX-Tools. He is a regularly featured speaker at industry conferences and has authored or co-authored several books on Web development. His book The Document Object Model is widely regarded as the definitive resource for working with the DOM.

Greg Murray

MurrayGreg Murray was appointed as Ajax Architect for Sun Microsystems, and he is deeply involved in the Ajax movement through his participation in the OpenAjax Alliance and contributions to the Dojo Foundation's open-source JavaScript toolkit. Within Sun, Greg leads a grassroots effort advancing the integration of client-side scripting with Java technologies and is the creator and principal architect of Project jMaki. jMaki uses the best parts of Java and the best parts of JavaScript to deliver rich, Ajax-style widgets through a single, easy-to-use interface that accesses components from popular widget libraries such as Dojo, Script.aculo.us, Yahoo's UI Library, Spry, DHTML Goodies and Google's Web Toolkit. Greg contributed recently to the design and development of the Ajax-based Java Pet Store 2.0 Demo and helped create Java BluePrints solutions for using Ajax with Java technologies.

Joshua Porter

PorterJoshua Porter is the Director of Web Development at User Interface Engineering. A leading member of UIE's research team, he has written extensively on such topics as Web 2.0, Ajax, Web standards and on-site search systems. Peter Rodgers

RodgersPeter Rodgers is a cofounder of 1060 Research and a co-architect of 1060 NetKernel. Prior to forming 1060 Research, Peter was the leader of Hewlett-Packard's Dexter research program. At HP, he held a number of positions including senior research scientist and senior strategist to HP's mobile computing division. In 1999, Rodgers founded HP's Information Commerce research program. He holds a first-class BSc in physics from St. Andrews University and a Ph.D. in solid-state quantum mechanics from the University of Nottingham.

Sanjay Sarathy

Scharfetter Sanjay Sarathy was promoted to Above All Software's chief executive officer in October 2006, after serving as VP of marketing since early 2005. Sanjay is responsible for setting the company's strategic direction and for the day-to-day leadership and management of the company. Sanjay brings more than 14 years of diverse technology experience, including specific expertise in the areas of Web services, product and go-to-market strategies, and community development. Prior to joining Above All, Sanjay was Vice President of Marketing at Qualys, a leading network security provider. In addition to the typical mix including Sun, Java and Oracle, he has many years of involvement with a variety of open source approaches including linux, perl, apache, mysql, postgres and now ruby and ruby on rails. He launched the WholePeople.com initiative as part of Whole Foods Inc. and was a core developer for CodeZoo.com, an O'Reilly and Associates Web product. He also provided necessary technical leadership to the Measure Map product acquired by Google.

Tim Walling

Software Architect, Allurent Inc.

WallingTim Walling is a software architect at Allurent and is responsible for developing data-driven commerce applications for consumers and business users. Tim has more than six years of experience in developing Web-based applications with knowledge in various fields including usability, interface design, information architecture and rich Internet applications (RIA). As a contractor, Tim worked on several projects for clients such as iRobot, Fidelity, Equifax and MINI USA, including the MINI USA configurator redesign/relaunch, which has been featured as an Adobe RIA case study. He holds a BA in Biology from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.

Coach Wei

Chairman and CTO, Nexaweb Technologies

WeiCoach Wei is chairman and CTO of Nexaweb, an enterprise Web 2.0 software company. Coach founded Nexaweb in 2000 and served as CEO until summer 2003. Before founding Nexaweb, Coach architected and designed enterprise software for managing storage networks at EMC Corporation. As a graduate researcher at MIT, Coach developed software and hardware systems for nondestructive evaluation as well as signal/image processing algorithms. Coach was a finalist in the 1999 MIT $50K entrepreneurship competition and holds several U.S. patents. Coach holds an M.S. in information technology from MIT. Over the last ten years, Coach has been working on the vision for the next generation Web. He wrote one of the first Ajax-based word processors from 1997 to 1999. He founded Nexaweb in 2000 for enterprise Web 2.0, initiated the Apache XAP incubation project for declarative Ajax, and has been actively promoting open source and open standards via W3C and OpenAjax Alliance as well as maintaining a Web 2.0 blog.

HendersonCal Henderson has been a Web applications developer for far too long and should really start looking for a serious job. Originally from England, he currently works at Yahoo! Inc. in Sunnyvale, California as the engineering manager for the photosharing service Flickr. Before working at Flickr, Cal was the technical director of special Web projects at Emap, a UK media company. By night, he works for several Web sites and communities, including the creative community B3TA [www.b3ta.com] and his personal site, iamcal.com. In his spare time, he writes Windows software, develops Web publishing tools and writes occasional articles about Web application development and security. In 2006, Cal wrote Building Scalable Websites, published by O'Reilly Media Inc.

Jim Heid

HendersonJim Heid is one of the most experienced technology writers and instructors in the world. His 24-year career began at the dawn of the personal computer revolution, when he quit his job as a typographer to become technical editor of Kilobaud, one of the first computer magazines. He's been online since 1980, when he fired up a 300-baud modem and logged onto The Source, an early online service.

Since 1998, Jim has served as Conference Chair for over a dozen Thunder Lizard conferences, and has spoken to thousands of Web professionals on subjects ranging from typography to streaming media. As Conference Chair, he is responsible for planning the editorial scope of each event, recruiting speakers, and planning session content.

Jim has been a Contributing Editor and columnist for Macworld magazine since 1984, specializing in digital media topics ranging from Web design to DVD authoring. He has also written for the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, PC World, and Internet World, and has taught at the University of Hawaii, the Center for Creative Imaging in Camden, Maine, and at dozens of conferences and industry events in between.
